Maine Eyes Sales Tax on laundry and Drycleaning Services

In an effort to reduce the state income taxes, the Maine Legislature is looking to broaden taxes in other areas.  One of the proposed measures would be to expand the state sales to personal services such as drycleaning, laundry, painting, lawn care, and house cleaning.

NEFA is opposed to any sales tax on drycleaning and has been successful in battling it in other areas of the Northeast.  One of the most successful arguments NEFA has relied on is the necessity of Drycleaning and Laundry.  It is a personal safety and cleanliness issue.  It is not a luxury as some people like to classify it.  It is an extremely important service, and for many garments, there is no choice but to use a professional cleaner.

NEFA will monitor the tax proposals and will be calling on members in Maine to help in voicing opposition to the proposed changes.
