Massachusetts Will Again Look to a Perc Phaseout
The Massachusetts Legislature will again be asked to consider laws that will call for phaseouts of perc and other chemicals. The Bill that will be introduced this session is expected to be very similar to the bill that was defeated last year. While the language of the bill has not been released, and there has been no Bill number assigned yet, NEFA is closely monitoring the situation. The bill has been introduced and is #834 on the House Docket. There is a similar measure that has been filed in the Senate. In addition to this Bill, there are other proposed actions that NEFA is closely following. In reviewing the docket numbers and titles for the proposed regulations, it appears that there could be other entries of great concern to the industry. Docket #1099 calls for the Toxic Use Reduction Institute to study 10 Chemicals Compounds and their potential alternatives.
This is a much broader approach then the ones used in the past. The proponents of the infamous "10 Toxics Bill" have decided to attack industry on a number of fronts.
While NEFA will continue to work with a coalition of business and industry leaders committed to defeating these actions, we will also be using grass roots efforts to make the law makers understand the specifics of this industry. We will make them realize the dramatic effects an unreasonable, unnecessary phaseout would have on the Commonwealth and the Industry. Continue on Next Page
